Michigan Tea Party U.S. Rep Dan Benishek (R-1st) isn’t wasting time in launching his bid for re-election…however, he is having no trouble wasting your tax dollars, and lots of them. Smarting from the spate of new radio spots against him, his campaign is firing-back, at taxpayer expense.
It all started when the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee targeted Benishek for a five-week blitz of radio ads over the summer break painting the congressman as having the “wrong priorities”. To top it off, a popular Democratic challenger just announced his intention to run for the seat in the 2014 election. Jerry Cannon, retired Kalkaska County Sheriff and National Guard General said:
“I’m frustrated. Politicians in Washington, like our congressman, have forgotten why they were sent there — to create jobs and work for the middle class.”
Benishek, not wishing to tap his precious campaign dollars, has gone the way of big government and spent your money to defend himself. In an otherwise perfectly legal abuse of franking privileges, the Tea Party lawmaker has slapped together an 8 1/2 by 11 bi-fold full-color brochure which he mailed to all his constituents in a district that is the second largest geographically on the east side of the country.
But there may be a problem with just one tiny little word though….
True, the mailing follows the letter of the law by clearly stating in small print that it “was prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense.” And the content is marginally legal, being no more than a thinly veiled campaign pitch. Where it pushes the limit of the law is with the simple use of just one word: ”DR. DAN BENISHEK, CONGRESSMAN FOR MICHIGAN’S FIRST DISTRICT”… Note the not-so-subtle use of the word “for” and not ”of” — a switch-a-roo that screams campaign literature…and possibly a violation of the law.
The campaign brochure, ur…perfectly legal informational piece, went on to express his top priorities, starting with his support for “policies that will create jobs”, which in his order of importance are:
- Vocational training so “individuals can get the right job training needed to land the jobs available right now.”
- De-regulation to financially aid the “job creators”.
- Reducing the national debt so “job creators” aren’t feeling so twitchy.
His policy wizardry continues with a questionnaire designed to get to the bottom of how his constituents really feel about Washington. He asks probing questions that are bound to lead to breakthrough insights:
The statistical polling expert behind this survey is to be commended for their novel scientific approach. Especially with question number three — a true indicator of the intelligence behind the Benishek team.
Benishek wraps-up his taxpayer paid full-color candy-gram with a promise to protect your second amendment rights. Thanks Dan, folks might actually need their guns in the distopian corporatized world you envision.
