Detroit Federation of Teachers Joins in Fight Against Emergency Manager Law

An Important message from Stand Up for Democracy:

DFT TEACHERS TO JOIN COALITION PROTEST DEMANDING E.M. REPEAL BE PLACED ON BALLOT NOW

Public School teachers and employees anger fueled by management chaos, salary cuts, layoffs

Who: Detroit Federation of Teachers members will join leaders in the political, ecumenical, community and labor movement, organizers of the repeal of the emergency manager law, citizens and supporters

What: Community protest and visit to the court seeking end to delay of placing repeal of the emergency manager law on the November 2012 ballot

When: Protest begins at 3:15 p.m. TODAY, July 11, 2012.

Where: Michigan Court of Appeals, 320 W. Grand Blvd. in midtown Detroit

Why: Detroit Public Schools E.M. Roy Roberts announced deep cuts in teacher and staff wages, and benefits in an unsigned document titled “collective bargaining agreement” recently. This lie will not stand. There never was any bargaining. And there is no agreement. But it is another reason teachers are joining today’s protest demanding the state enforce the court order requiring the repeal petition of the Emergency Manager “dictator” law be placed on the ballot. Community groups have been organizing to continue raising public pressure including peaceful protests. For months, right-wing elements in state government have been hard at work making sure the petition to repeal the emergency manager dictator law would never make it to the ballot.

End of message.
